Residential Solar Billing (Net-Metering) Explained

One of the most common questions about going solar is “How will I be billed by the electric company?” When you agree to feed electricity from solar power onto the grid and pull electricity off the grid (aka net-metering), your new electric bill will be different.

You will still pay a few dollars each month in surcharges but your usage over and above your solar output will be collected in a cumulative account. On the anniversary of your solar installation (or PTO Permission to Turn On), you will receive a cumulative bill for any usage over your solar production OR you will receive a check from the utility company for energy you overproduced for the year.
